Let’s face it, we live in a world that thrives on customization. I remember as a kid I had a choice of 5 types of cereals, two options for cheese, two blue jean manufacturers and a couple of shampoo brands. How far have we come? While shopping yesterday it took me over an hour to select a birthday card for my daughter. The card section at the grocery store was almost the length of a football field! We love to have choices, don’t we? Not only do we love to have a customized experience…we demand it.
That conviction should not stop when it comes to our business software needs. “Customization” in the software application industry, in its truest sense, is a nightmare. How can any application do everything you want? Being in the software development industry has taught me that every individual has their own tastes, whether what the application looks like or how it operates. The age-old adage “…you can’t please everyone” stands true to this day! But if my business is truly distinct from every other business, and I want an application that fits to my business model, not my model to it, is there a solution?
As I peruse website after website I see Software Companies boasting on their ability to “customize” your software experience to fit your business and your needs. Most of these claims fall under two camps. The first camp does not really offer a customized experience at all, merely some additional (and sometimes lengthy) feature selections to give you more choices. These choices seem at times to be limitless but are still geared to confine you to their opinion of what your business needs. It isn’t true customization at all. The second camp may have a level of customization but at a price. These customizations are undertaken by a developer (or team of developers) and, though they are true customizations, can cost you more than an arm and a leg!
Is there not an application out there that one can purchase that has the flexibility and tools to truly customize and not leave you at the mercy of a team of developers that may not have your budget top of mind?
