In Dubai, the future of air mobility is preparing for takeoff. Through partnerships with companies like Joby Aviation, Dubai is advancing plans for electric vertical takeoff and landing aircraft, commonly known as eVTOL air taxis. These aircraft are designed to transport passengers above city traffic, connecting key districts and airports in minutes rather than hours. With dedicated vertiports under development and regulatory frameworks evolving, Dubai aims to position itself at the forefront of commercial urban air mobility.

While Dubai looks upward, automation in the United States is transforming ground level logistics. DoorDash has introduced autonomous delivery robots designed to handle last mile food transport in select U.S. markets. These compact, electric units navigate sidewalks and neighborhood streets using AI powered mapping, obstacle detection, and remote monitoring systems. Customers receive notifications through the app and unlock the robot’s compartment upon arrival, completing a fully driverless delivery experience.

Together, these innovations reflect a broader shift in how transportation and logistics are evolving. In Dubai, autonomous air taxis promise to redefine urban commuting. In the U.S., automated delivery robots are reshaping everyday services like meal delivery. Whether in the sky or on the sidewalk, mobility is becoming increasingly electric, intelligent, and autonomous.

Let’s be honest — romance isn’t the first thing that comes to mind when you see a 30-yard roll-off container. But after years in the waste management industry, I’ve come to realize that love and landfill have more in common than you’d think. In fact, the trusty dumpster might just be the ultimate relationship guru. Here’s what my favorite roll-off container taught me about love:

1. It’s What’s Inside That Counts

Sure, roll-offs can look rough on the outside. Dented. Rusty. Maybe a mysterious stain or two. But it’s the contents that tell the real story. Relationships are the same—it’s less about the outer sparkle and more about the substance. Don’t be fooled by surface-level charm; look for someone who’s solid where it counts.

2. Know Your Limits

Every roll-off has a weight limit—and trust me, you’ll regret ignoring it. Emotional overload in a relationship? Same result. Know how much you can handle, and don’t take on more than your heart (or hydraulic lift) can manage.

3. Sometimes, You Need to Be Emptied Out

Just like a roll-off needs regular dumping to stay functional, relationships need emotional cleanup. Holding in old arguments, petty grievances, or that time they “accidentally” forgot your birthday? That stuff piles up. Schedule regular check-ins—or risk overflowing.

4. Placement Is Everything

A poorly placed dumpster can block driveways, cause accidents, or just be flat-out annoying. Relationships are no different. If your partnership is constantly in the way of your career, family, or peace of mind, it might be time to reposition—or relocate entirely.

5. Lids Optional, Boundaries Not

Roll-offs don’t always come with lids, but they do come with rules. Relationships need boundaries too. Define what’s acceptable, what’s not, and make sure you’re both on the same page—or you’ll end up with unexpected “guests” (like raccoons… or exes).

6. Not Everything Belongs in There

Tires? Nope. Batteries? Nope. Toxic waste? Definitely not. Just because a relationship can hold something doesn’t mean it should. Set standards for what behaviors, attitudes, and emotional baggage you’re willing to accept. Spoiler: emotional toxic waste is never a good idea.

7. You Can’t Stay in One Spot Forever

Even the most reliable container needs to be hauled away eventually. Relationships are meant to grow, move, and evolve. If you’re stuck in the same place year after year, maybe it’s time to roll forward.

Final Thought:

So the next time you’re walking past a roll-off container, don’t just see a box full of junk—see a seasoned relationship coach with steel walls and decades of wisdom. Love, like waste, can get messy— but with the right container, even the messiest parts can be handled with care.

Repurposing is the creative process of turning waste into valuable resources. This could involve converting an old ladder into a bookshelf, using wine corks to make a bulletin board, or transforming pallets into garden furniture. Repurposing encourages innovation and resourcefulness, allowing us to see the potential in items that might otherwise be discarded.

On a larger scale, businesses are finding ways to repurpose industrial byproducts, such as using food waste to create biofuels or repurposing plastic waste into building materials. This not only diverts waste from landfills but also creates new economic opportunities.

1. What is Repurposing in Waste Management?

•Definition: Repurposing refers to taking an item that would otherwise be discarded and finding a new use for it, typically without significant alteration. Unlike recycling, which involves breaking materials down, repurposing keeps the original form of the item intact.

•Core Concept: Repurposing encourages creativity and sustainability by giving new life to items that might otherwise be thrown away, reducing the need for new resources and minimizing waste.

•Difference from Reuse: While reuse often means using something for the same purpose repeatedly, repurposing specifically involves finding a new purpose for an old item.

2. Why is Repurposing Important?

Environmental Impact:

•Waste Reduction: By finding new uses for old items, repurposing reduces the amount of waste sent to landfills, incinerators, and recycling facilities.

•Conservation of Resources: Repurposing helps conserve natural resources because fewer new raw materials are needed when old products are used in innovative ways.

•Lower Pollution: Manufacturing new items often involves pollution from resource extraction, production, and transportation. Repurposing reduces the demand for new products, lowering associated environmental impacts.

•Reduced Energy Use: Because repurposing doesn’t require breaking down materials (as in recycling), it saves significant amounts of energy compared to traditional recycling or manufacturing processes.

Economic Benefits:

•Cost Savings: Individuals and businesses can save money by repurposing items instead of purchasing new products. For example, repurposing old furniture or containers can eliminate the need for buying new storage or decor.

•Boosting Local Economies: Small businesses that focus on upcycling or selling repurposed goods contribute to the local economy, creating jobs and promoting sustainable business models.

Creative and Social Benefits:

•Creativity and Innovation: Repurposing encourages people to think creatively about how to give items a second life, promoting resourcefulness and problem-solving.

•Community Involvement: Repurposing initiatives, such as community workshops or swap events, encourage collaboration and sharing within neighborhoods, building a sense of community around sustainability efforts.

3. Examples of Repurposing in Daily Life

At Home:

•Glass Jars: Old glass jars from food items can be repurposed as storage containers for pantry items, craft supplies, or even small indoor planters.

•Old Clothing: T-shirts can be turned into cleaning rags, tote bags, or even quilts. Jeans can be repurposed into durable aprons or pillow covers.

•Furniture: Wooden pallets can be transformed into shelving, garden furniture, or even planters. Old doors can be repurposed into tables, headboards, or wall decor.

•Plastic Containers: Reuse plastic containers as organizers in the kitchen, garage, or home office.

In the Garden:

•Tires: Used tires can be repurposed as planters, garden swings, or even outdoor seating.

•Wine Bottles: Wine bottles can be upcycled into garden edging, bird feeders, or even decorative lanterns for outdoor spaces.

•Cans and Buckets: Use old metal cans or buckets as pots for plants or tool storage.

For Kids’ Crafts and Education:

•Cardboard Boxes: Old cardboard boxes can become creative playhouses, costume props, or storage units. They can also be used for educational projects like building models or creating dioramas.

•Bottle Caps and Corks: Bottle caps, corks, and other small materials can be turned into craft supplies for making mosaics, artwork, or educational tools.

•Paper Rolls: Empty toilet paper and paper towel rolls can be repurposed for art projects, organizing cords, or creating DIY toys.

4. Repurposing in Business and Industry

•Office Spaces: Businesses can repurpose old office furniture by redesigning or refurbishing it instead of buying new. For example, old desks can be repurposed into workbenches or shelving units.

•Construction Materials: In the construction industry, repurposing old materials such as reclaimed wood, bricks, and metal can reduce waste and lower costs for building projects. These materials can be used in new construction or for aesthetic, vintage-style renovations.

•Repurposed Products: Some companies specialize in creating new products from repurposed materials, such as turning old vinyl records into clocks, using ocean plastics to create fashion items, or repurposing industrial waste into art or functional products.

•Shipping Containers: Repurposing shipping containers into homes, offices, or pop-up shops has become a popular way to reduce waste and create unique, eco-friendly spaces.

5. Creative and Innovative Approaches to Repurposing

•Upcycling: A form of repurposing where old materials or products are creatively transformed into something of higher quality or value. Examples include turning old fabrics into fashionable accessories or converting scrap wood into artistic furniture.

•Art and Design: Repurposed materials can be used for artistic expression. Artists and designers often take discarded objects and create sculptures, installations, or functional items like lamps, chairs, or clothing.

•Circular Economy and Repurposing: In a circular economy model, repurposing plays a critical role by keeping materials and products in use for longer, reducing the need for new resource extraction and lowering environmental impact.

6. Benefits of Repurposing

•Promotes a Circular Economy: Repurposing supports a circular economy by keeping products and materials in use for longer, reducing waste and encouraging sustainable production and consumption cycles.

•Supports Zero-Waste Living: For individuals and communities aiming to achieve zero waste, repurposing is a crucial strategy. By finding new uses for existing items, less waste is generated, and fewer resources are consumed.

•Inspires Sustainable Lifestyles: Repurposing items encourages mindfulness about consumption and waste, helping people live more sustainably by making the most out of what they already own.

•Educational Opportunities: Repurposing can be a tool for teaching sustainability, creativity, and resourcefulness, whether in schools, community groups, or through public awareness campaigns.

7. Challenges and Considerations in Repurposing

•Time and Effort: Finding creative ways to repurpose items requires time and effort, which can sometimes discourage people from doing it. However, once individuals develop the habit, it becomes a natural part of sustainable living.

•Not All Items Are Easily Repurposed: Some items, particularly those made from mixed or toxic materials, may be difficult or unsafe to repurpose.

•Space Requirements: Repurposing items often requires space to store old materials, which can be a challenge for people living in small homes or urban environments.

8. How to Encourage Repurposing in Communities

•Host Swap Events: Communities can organize swap events where people can exchange unwanted items that others might find useful, promoting the repurposing of products.

•DIY Workshops: Local governments or non-profits can host DIY (Do-It-Yourself) workshops teaching community members how to repurpose common household items into useful objects.

•Promote Repurposing Businesses: Support businesses that specialize in upcycling and repurposing by promoting their services or organizing collaborations with local governments and schools.

•Online Communities and Sharing Platforms: Platforms like Freecycle, Craigslist, or neighborhood groups can facilitate the sharing of items that people no longer need but that others might repurpose.

Conclusion: Embracing Repurposing for a Sustainable Future

Repurposing is a powerful tool in the fight against waste and overconsumption. By finding new uses for old items, we can reduce the strain on our planet’s resources, decrease pollution, and foster a more sustainable way of living. Whether it’s through creative DIY projects, upcycling in the arts, or adopting repurposing practices in business, the possibilities are endless.

Reuse: Give Items a Second Life

The third R, *reuse*, emphasizes the importance of using items multiple times before discarding them. Many everyday items can be repurposed or used repeatedly instead of being thrown away after a single use. For instance, glass jars can be used for storage, cloth bags can replace plastic ones, and old clothing can be transformed into cleaning rags.

Reusing also includes purchasing second-hand items or donating goods that are no longer needed. This practice not only reduces waste but also supports a circular economy where products are kept in use for as long as possible, thus reducing the need for new resources.

“Reuse” in waste management refers to the practice of using items multiple times, extending their lifecycle to prevent them from becoming waste too quickly. It differs from recycling in that the material is not broken down or processed; instead, it is simply used again in its current form, which saves energy and resources.

Key Aspects of Reuse in Waste Management:

1. Environmental Benefits: Reusing items helps reduce the need for manufacturing new products, which consumes energy and raw materials. It also cuts down on the waste that would otherwise end up in landfills or incinerators, reducing pollution and the environmental footprint.

2. Examples of Reuse:

•Household Items: Glass jars, plastic containers, and cloth bags can be repurposed for storage, planting, or as packaging.

•Clothing: Old clothing can be passed down, donated, or turned into cleaning rags or upcycled into new items.

•Electronics: Instead of discarding old electronics, they can be refurbished, repaired, or given to someone who can still use them.

•Building Materials: Salvaged wood, bricks, and metal from demolition projects can be reused in construction.

3.Economic Benefits:

• Cost Savings: By reusing items, individuals and businesses can save money on purchasing new products.

• Job Creation: Industries that focus on repairing, refurbishing, or reselling used goods create local jobs and stimulate economic activity.

4. Circular Economy: Reuse plays a critical role in the circular economy, which aims to minimize waste by keeping products, components, and materials in use for as long as possible.

5. Cultural and Community Impact:

•Communities often engage in reuse through secondhand shops, donation centers, and online marketplaces, fostering a culture of sharing and resourcefulness.

Strategies to Encourage Reuse:

•Product Design: Designing products to be durable, repairable, and easy to repurpose encourages reuse.

•Incentive Programs: Offering incentives for returning or donating items can motivate consumers to choose reuse over disposal.

•Awareness Campaigns: Educating the public about the environmental and economic benefits of reuse promotes behavior change.

Incorporating “reuse” into daily habits helps reduce the strain on resources, supports sustainability, and promotes mindful consumption. Reuse involves finding ways to use items again, either for the same purpose or repurposing them, to avoid discarding them as waste. This helps extend the lifecycle of products and reduces the need for new materials.

Once we’ve refused unnecessary items, the next step is to **reduce** what we consume. This involves making mindful choices about the quantity of products we purchase and use. For example, opting for products with minimal packaging or choosing high-quality, durable goods that last longer can significantly reduce waste.

Reducing consumption also applies to energy and resources. Simple actions like turning off lights when not in use, conserving water, and minimizing food waste contribute to this principle. By reducing our overall consumption, we can lower the strain on natural resources and decrease the volume of waste produced.

What is “Reduce” in Waste Management?

•Definition: “Reduce” refers to minimizing the amount of waste generated by consuming fewer resources and avoiding excess consumption. It focuses on cutting down waste before it is even created.

•Core Principle: The idea is to prevent waste at the source, which is the most effective way to manage waste since it eliminates the need for disposal or recycling. By reducing what we buy and use, we lower the amount of waste sent to landfills or recycling facilities.

Why is “Reducing” Waste Important?

1. Environmental Impact

•Resource Conservation: Reducing consumption conserves natural resources like water, energy, and raw materials (e.g., trees, metals, fossil fuels). Fewer resources are extracted from the environment.

•Less Pollution: By consuming fewer products, there’s less production, leading to fewer pollutants released into the air, water, and soil during manufacturing processes.

•Climate Change Mitigation: Manufacturing products and managing waste generates greenhouse gases. By reducing consumption, we lower these emissions, helping combat climate change.

•Reduced Landfill Use: Landfills take up space and release harmful methane gases as waste breaks down. Reducing waste means fewer materials end up in landfills, decreasing their environmental impact.

2. Economic Benefits

•Cost Savings: Reducing consumption means spending less money on goods, packaging, and disposable items. Households and businesses can save money by buying only what is necessary.

•Lower Waste Management Costs: For cities and towns, managing waste (through landfills, incineration, or recycling) is expensive. When less waste is generated, municipalities spend less on collection and processing.

•Efficiency for Businesses: Companies that reduce waste can lower production costs and improve profitability, especially in industries where resource efficiency directly impacts the bottom line.

3. Social Benefits

•Promotes a Simpler Lifestyle: Reducing consumption encourages mindful habits, helping people focus on what truly adds value to their lives rather than accumulating excessive goods.

•Encourages Innovation: The drive to reduce waste encourages businesses to design products that use fewer resources and last longer, contributing to a more sustainable economy.

How to Implement “Reducing” in Everyday Life

1. In Daily Habits

•Buy Less: Ask yourself if you truly need a product before buying it. Avoid impulse purchases and focus on buying durable, high-quality items that will last longer.

•Choose Reusable Over Disposable: Opt for reusable products (like water bottles, bags, coffee cups, and containers) instead of single-use items.

•Reduce Packaging Waste: Purchase products with minimal or no packaging. Opt for bulk purchases and avoid overly packaged goods.

•Repair Before Replacing: Instead of discarding broken items, repair them. Many things like electronics, furniture, and clothing can be fixed with minimal effort or cost.

2. In the Kitchen

•Plan Meals: Planning meals helps reduce food waste. Buying only what you need for the week prevents over-purchasing and spoiling of perishable items.

•Composting: Composting food scraps and yard waste reduces the amount of organic material that goes to the landfill and contributes to nutrient-rich soil.

•Use Reusable Kitchen Items: Choose cloth napkins, reusable beeswax wraps instead of plastic wrap, and reusable containers over disposable plastic bags.

3. At the Office or School

•Go Paperless: Reduce paper usage by adopting digital tools for note-taking, document sharing, and communication.

•Print Wisely: Print only when necessary, and always use double-sided printing to reduce paper consumption.

•Reusable Stationery: Opt for refillable pens, pencils, and notebooks instead of single-use ones. Bring your own coffee mug and utensils to avoid disposable items.

4. In Shopping Habits

•Avoid Fast Fashion: Buy high-quality, durable clothing that lasts longer instead of cheap, disposable fashion items.

•Eco-friendly Alternatives: Choose products made from sustainable, non-toxic, or recycled materials. Support brands that prioritize sustainable production.

•Buy Second-hand: Consider buying second-hand or vintage items instead of new ones. This not only reduces the demand for new goods but also keeps products in circulation.

Examples of “Reducing” Waste in Businesses and Industry

1. Sustainable Manufacturing

•Lean Manufacturing: Companies adopt lean manufacturing techniques to eliminate waste in production processes. This includes reducing material waste, optimizing energy use, and improving efficiency.

•Packaging Innovation: Some companies reduce waste by designing more sustainable packaging, such as using biodegradable materials, reducing packaging size, or eliminating it altogether.

•Product Longevity: Brands focusing on durable, repairable products (e.g., electronics, furniture) ensure their items have a longer life cycle, reducing the need for replacements.

2. Zero Waste to Landfill Goals

Many businesses adopt “Zero Waste” goals, where they aim to divert 100% of their waste from landfills by reducing, reusing, recycling, and composting as much as possible.

3. Efficient Resource Use

•Energy Reduction: Industries reduce energy use by upgrading machinery, adopting renewable energy, and streamlining processes to minimize waste.

•Water Conservation: Companies implement water-saving technologies and processes that reduce their overall water consumption and wastewater generation.

The Impact of “Reducing” Waste on Sustainability

•Circular Economy: Reduction is a key principle in the circular economy, where the goal is to keep products and materials in use for as long as possible. In a circular system, reduction minimizes the flow of resources into the economy, reducing environmental impact.

•Minimalist Living: The concept of minimalism ties into reducing waste. By embracing a “less is more” philosophy, people reduce their environmental footprint, minimize clutter, and focus on quality over quantity.

•Global Impact: Large-scale waste reduction efforts are vital in addressing global environmental challenges like ocean plastic pollution, deforestation, and resource depletion. Every individual, household, and business that reduces waste helps contribute to these global efforts.

Tips for Encouraging Others to “Reduce” Waste

•Lead by Example: Show others how simple and beneficial it is to reduce waste through your actions. Share your strategies for reducing consumption in everyday life.

•Host Educational Events: Organize workshops or community events to teach others about waste reduction. Topics might include DIY repairs, zero-waste living, or sustainable shopping habits.

•Support Policies That Promote Reduction: Advocate for local and national policies that encourage waste reduction, such as plastic bag bans, packaging regulations, and incentives for sustainable practices.

•Share Success Stories: Highlight businesses, communities, or individuals that have successfully reduced their waste, inspiring others to take similar actions.

Conclusion: The Power of “Reducing” Waste

“Reduce” is the most impactful of the 3Rs (Reduce, Reuse, Recycle) because it tackles waste at the source. By making conscious decisions to buy less, consume fewer resources, and prioritize quality over quantity, individuals and businesses can significantly reduce their environmental impact. Waste reduction isn’t just about producing less garbage—it’s about rethinking how we use and value resources in all aspects of life.

Start small, share practical steps, and emphasize the long-term benefits of adopting waste reduction habits. By fostering awareness and action, the “reduce” principle can lead to lasting environmental, economic, and personal gains.

Cheers! We’ve made it halfway through 2022. If you’re asking yourself, “what should we expect to look forward to in fast-approaching 2023?” – we did some of our own research and found one evolving aspect of our industry that comes up regularly that we’d like to shed some light on.

ELECTRIC GARBAGE TRUCKS

Although they’ve been on the roads of London, Dubai, and other parts of the globe for a few years now, we are seeing more and more that the introduction of electric waste trucks are starting to trickle into other cities scattered across the United States as well. Recently, Ocala Florida has joined the host of cities with 100% electric waste trucks ( https://www.electrive.com/2022/05/16/mack-trucks-sell-three-electric-refuse-vehicles-in-florida/ ). The article mentions a handful of great facts and benefits about how the electric trucks have positively impacted their communities. Most importantly, the incredible cost efficiencies and positive environment effects that are associated with these trucks.

If the next question you’re asking yourself is, “What about battery longevity and the long distances needed in-between charging the electric garbage trucks?” – this article answers BOTH questions, specifically regarding Mack Trucks.

“The Mack LR Electric, introduced in the latest version this March, offers 42 per cent more energy through 376 kWh battery capacity for the increased range between charges. Twin electric motors with 448 continuous horsepower drive the vehicle.”

“What is more, the cost savings are “huge,” King added. “Our residential diesel-powered refuse vehicles travel 75 miles per day, servicing about 1,000 homes. That’s about $145 in fuel consumption, per truck, per day. The electric vehicle costs about $30 to charge it,” he explained.”

I think we are all hoping the price point of these vehicles come down a bit to make them more accessible for all haulers. Meanwhile, the desire to grow our businesses responsibly and eco-friendly is at the front of the industry radar!

Do you have real-time access and transparency to your routes, drivers, and trucks?

Do you know where each and every one of your containers are located and how frequently they are being utilized?

Can you generate operational, efficiency and profitability reports on your routes and containers? What about city, county and/or state compliance reports?

Are you minimizing human interaction and human error in the system by utilizing touch technology and a user-interface that captures data automatically?

Are you missing opportunities to capture extra revenue or customer information that is critical to your operation?

Creating a Smart Fleet is not the responsibility of a consultant or a software company…it is your responsibility. It starts with being aware of the benefits of having such an integrated system and ends with taking steps to implement it. Like any worthy endeavor, it takes one step at a time. To fully quote a famous proverb, “Rome was not built in a day, but they were laying bricks every hour.” While awareness is the first “brick”, the second one would be finding a partner that understands what your “Rome” is actually going to look like when it is finished.

Remember a second ago when I mentioned the need to “be aware”?
Once aware, the next question that should come to mind would be, “Is the software we have providing both our customers and us the most accurate data and real-time transparency?”

Alpine asked these same questions when we put ourselves in Haulers’ shoes.
Making Tough Decisions: The Story of Robert “Bob” Abram Bartlett

Bob Bartlett was born August 15, 1875. He was a man that had an insatiable appetite for the Arctic waters and at the ripe age of 17, mastered his first ship. For over 50 years, Captain Bartlett of the SS Roosevelt mapped and explored the entirety of the North, thus ultimately becoming the first man to sail north of 88 degrees N. Sadly for us, he never found Santa Claus or any reindeer when Bartlett was sailing up in the North Pole, but he did continue to courageously lead his crew on more than 40 daring expeditions throughout the Arctic; the most any explorer has led before or after him since.

One part of his life that has been famously told throughout the years, is about one expedition in particular…an expedition that didn’t go quite as planned. In 1914, Robert and his shipmates found themselves aboard the “Karluk” helplessly stranded on Wrangel Island in the dead of winter. The ship’s leader, Vilhjalmur Stefansson, abandoned the Karluk the first chance he had, ultimately leaving everyone to fend for themselves. After being stranded for months, who do you imagine stepped up to the plate? Yep, you guessed it: Bob Bartlett. He and an Inuit hunter that was also aboard crusaded 700 miles over the ice of the Chukchi Sea and across Siberia. Although they were able to put together a roughly-built kayak with whatever supplies they could muster, they mostly voyaged on foot. From there, they boarded an expedition from Alaska and returned to Wrangel Island to successfully rescue everyone aboard the Karluk.

Unsurprisingly, in 1917 Bob came to the rescue of the ship, Crocker Land Expedition, and again saved the remaining survivors left alive. They had been stranded on the ice for almost 4 whole years.

You’re probably asking, “okay, so what does this story have to do with my business?”

I wanted to shine a bit of an unconventional spotlight on Bob Bartlett’s unwavering drive to reach his lifelong goals and passions of sailing across the Arctic. It’s beyond admirable. He spent decades planning every route, immersing himself in every weather measurement possible, determining how long each leg of an expedition would take, and estimating how much supplies he would need to take. He had to be precise, patient, calculated and intentional. But most importantly, he had to be able to communicate effectively with each crew member while being prepared for anything and everything that could go wrong.

Bartlett’s approach is not too different from the approach our business leaders must take to reach their goals. Though passion and mindset are crucial, they alone cannot help your business thrive, it takes work and a lot planning. Bartlett surrounded himself with enough data to make calculated decisions that transcended circumstances. Leaders need accurate information that can help them make the decisions they need to make daily, monthly and annually. Alpine’s office application and in-cab technology provide leaders thousands of data points and hundreds of reports that do just that…equip leaders to make informed decisions. Reports should:

The Future of the Waste Industry

The past two posts have given some keen insight into what demands and circumstances have brought us to where we are today. The convergence of increased waste production and the desire to protect our environment has forced the Waste Industry to adopt new technologies and operational practices that have had mixed results for both haulers and municipalities.

So, what does the future hold? Firstly, I believe the industry as a whole agrees that individual consumers, manufacturers and municipalities must take responsibility for the problem. Changing packaging, investing in recycling, providing multi-stream drop off locations, and utilizing newer technologies are just a few things that need to be provided. Consumers must be incented to adopt recycling practices that support a future vision of zero waste. Without their adoption, all the resources in the world will not bring about change.

Secondly, while progressive technologies are not the only answer, they lie at the heart of the many solutions that have been proposed. More and more cities around the world are seeking to coordinate all their technological pieces into a unified, seamless unit. When this can be done, these “smart cities” can collect data, streamline operations, and provide data that can help them make better decisions for their residents and businesses. This is the wave of the future. With the internet, cloud technology and flexible applications smart cities now have the technological pieces to accomplish this.

Concepts like smart technology, machine learning, robotics, automation are just a few concepts that will govern the growth in the waste industry. The waste industry, unfortunately, has been accused in the past of being slow adopters of technology. However, if we are to overcome all the obstacles that have placed us where we are today, we need to leverage the technology that is currently available to make vast strides into the future.

Do you currently utilize solutions in your office and trucks that is flexible enough to integrate with other systems, thereby leveraging all the resources you can to grow your business? If you do not believe, so please contact Alpine Technology Corporation for a demo of how we can help your future.
