Waste management is a critical issue in our rapidly industrializing world. The sheer volume of waste generated every day poses significant environmental challenges, from overflowing landfills to ocean pollution. We all share the responsibility to confront these challenges and you, as a hauler, may play a larger role than you anticipated. However, there is a framework designed to mitigate these problems: the 5 R’s of waste management—Refuse, Reduce, Reuse, Repurpose, and Recycle. These principles provide a easy to understand roadmap for individuals, businesses, and communities to manage waste sustainably. We invite you to share these with your customers.

Refuse: The Power of Saying No

Understanding “Refuse” in Waste Management

The first and most impactful step in waste management is to “refuse”. It is one of the most crucial yet often overlooked principles of waste management, particularly within the framework of the “Zero Waste” philosophy. The concept of “Refuse” emphasizes the power of consciously rejecting products or materials that you do not need or that are harmful to the environment. It’s about making intentional choices to avoid accumulating waste, rather than simply dealing with it after it’s been created.

For example, declining single-use plastics and other non-biodegradable materials. By refusing items such as plastic straws, disposable cutlery, and excessive packaging, we reduce the demand for these products, encouraging manufacturers to adopt more sustainable practices.

Refusing also extends to digital waste. Unsubscribing from unnecessary emails, for instance, reduces the carbon footprint associated with data storage and transmission. The act of refusing is not just about rejecting physical items; it’s about making conscious decisions that prioritize the environment.

The idea is simple: if you don’t bring waste into your life, you don’t have to manage it later. This principle can be applied in various aspects of daily life, from refusing single-use plastics to declining unnecessary packaging, promotional items, or products that contribute to environmental harm.

Practical Ways to Implement “Refuse”

Say no to single-use plastics: Items like plastic straws, bags, and cutlery are major contributors to environmental pollution. By refusing them, you reduce your plastic footprint.

Decline excessive packaging: Choose products with minimal packaging or bring your own reusable bags and containers to reduce packaging waste.

Avoid disposable products: Opt for reusable items like water bottles, coffee cups, and cloth napkins instead of disposable ones.

Reject freebies and promotional items: Often, these items are unnecessary and quickly become waste. Politely decline them when offered.

Be mindful of digital waste: Even in the digital world, refuse unnecessary emails, subscriptions, or downloads that contribute to energy consumption and electronic waste.

Challenges and Solutions

Implementing the “Refuse” principle can come with challenges, particularly in a consumer-driven society where convenience often trumps sustainability. However, these challenges can be overcome with mindfulness and commitment:

Consumer Pressure: There is often social or marketing pressure to accept items you don’t need. Overcoming this requires a shift in mindset and values, focusing on long-term environmental benefits over short-term convenience.

Limited Alternatives: In some cases, sustainable alternatives may not be readily available or may be more expensive. Supporting and advocating for businesses that offer eco-friendly products can help increase availability and affordability over time.

Habit Change: Saying no requires conscious effort, especially if you’re accustomed to accepting items out of habit. Start small by focusing on one area of your life, like refusing plastic bags, and gradually expand to other areas.

Conclusion

The power of saying “no” through the “Refuse” principle is a foundational aspect of effective waste management. It places the responsibility on consumers to make thoughtful choices that prevent waste before it happens. By embracing this principle, individuals can significantly reduce their environmental impact, promote sustainability, and help foster a culture that values responsible consumption over wasteful habits.

“Refuse” is not just about individual action; it’s about collectively redefining what we accept as necessary and pushing for systemic change that prioritizes the planet over profit.

What can I still do to help my environment? Most people do not begin to know how to get these questions answered.

I hope this blog will at least clear the air a bit and help you in your journey to find some answers that you can live with.

It is not an easy solution to understand.

First of all, plastic waste can be hard to collect.

Also, There are some types of plastics that are more recyclable than others. Single-use plastics tend to be highly toxic and low in value but have a 20+% recyclable rate. Accurate sorting is virtually impossible. While alternatives, like aluminum or glass, are adequate solutions, the recycling rate on aluminum cans sits at around 50%.

Finally, toxic materials are contained in plastics and also contaminate recycling efforts.

Recycling is not impact-free. Plastic recycling is not the panacea we might think, it still has an impact on our environment (transportation, energy, and water). As experts seem to all agree, the best course of action is for our country to invest in reusable/refillable solutions.

Recycling is not a very economical solution. In addition to energy consumption; labor to collect, separate and clean; there are few markets for plastics since China locked down on their collection of recycled bundles. While the effort may well be worth the cost, it still is not a profitable venture on its own that might attract private companies to invest in.

Recycling is not a lost cause. There is still merit in recycling, even though the process is somewhat flawed and not perfect. The technology is evolving, we need to do our part. Our environment should be important enough to encourage us to take a longer view of our current actions. There are so many examples of “green technologies” that have overcome seemingly insurmountable obstacles like solar panels, energy-efficient appliances/lighting, electronic devices, electric vehicles, etc… The ability to collect, sort and clean plastics will get more economical, have less of an impact on our environment, and will eventually make economical sense. However, bottom line, it takes concerned consumers to explore and adopt such technologies when they avail themselves and don’t give up.

One day while I was relaxing with my granddaughter watching popular cartoons I came across this cute video from Pixar. The horde of chirping birds were going about their life on a telephone wire when an unassuming, larger bird wanted to join the chirping horde. Of course, the little birds were indignant toward the larger bird and did not want him to interrupt their busy lives. To the little birds, the larger bird was nothing more than a nuisance. The larger bird forced its way on to the telephone line and made the chirping birds a bit uncomfortable; forcing them to devise a plot to force the larger bird off the line. Hanging on by its talons the larger bird gripped to stay on the line. However, the chirping birds continued to peck away at the larger bird until it finally released the line, fell to the ground, and launched all the chirping birds into the sky. While once a nuisance, the larger bird’s presence on the line became a necessity to the chirping birds to stay on the line.

At once I envisioned the chirping birds as being our customer support representatives, going about their busy lives with much to do…no time for any nuisances or distractions. The larger bird reminds me of a needy customer that interjects into the life of a busy operation. Instead of viewing the customer as a welcome necessity, problem customers are often seen as nothing more than a nuisance. Our CSR’s want the problem customers to go away instead of taking the opportunity to help them become part of the organization’s “horde”.

Our Customer Support teams need to have an attitude shift when it comes to our customers. All our customers are the most valuable asset in our businesses. The CSR’s ability to fix a problem could turn a problem customer into a lifetime account. It doesn’t take much to calculate the CLTV (Customer Life-time Value) of an individual and be impressed with the mere income one customer can generate. In addition, individuals are more apt to refer your business when you fix their problems. I would dare say that problem customers are actually a necessity to a flourishing business.

Customer Service Representatives: Next time you see that problem customer’s number come up on your phone system, take a breath and remember this is the opportunity to make a difference in the life of your customer and make a life-timer out of them and a referral voice with amazing potential.

In previous blogs we have detailed some technological trends that have arisen in response to the increase in the U.S. population and resulting increase in waste products that must be managed. The success of any change effort in the Waste Industry is contingent upon an unprecedented cooperation between recyclers, designers, packagers, manufacturers, haulers, businesses, municipalities, governments and consumers. There is optimism that in 2020 great strides will be made toward such cooperation. Read ahead to see trends in the following areas:

#1- Computer technology will be used in various way to aid in the waste management. From Robotics at recycling facilities to the capturing of data from haulers at the service point, solutions evolve almost daily.

#2- Composting initiatives will take place along with more recycling programs. One example is the conversion of “Green Waste” (discarded food and other biowaste) into biofuels and away from landfills.

#3- We will see plastic waste made into a high-quality resin that will replace the current greenhouse gas-emitting prime resin that is used in the plastic industry. Over the past few years the plastic industry has made great strides to turn ecological and economically efficient plastic waste into this resin that emits less greenhouse gas. 2020 should show more growth in this arena.

#4- Researchers will look at ways that waste can be converted to energy (Waste to Energy). Currently there are already companies that have a process that turns food waste, biosolids, manure and other organics into activated carbon that can be sold to renewable natural gas companies.

#5- Municipalities and the government will be more involved in waste recycling, creating regulations for collecting and processing waste. The mounting waste problem has caused governments to push for more recycling initiatives and will continue to promote these through tax benefits and financial incentives (positive) and through landfill taxes on waste in North America (negative). The speed by which these regulations take hold will be on the shoulders of involved consumers and their involvement in the process.

#6- Packaging will continue to change into recyclable forms. Disposable items end up in the trash bin. Trends include smaller cardboard boxes, lighter-weighted bottles, flexible plastic packaging, and other kinds of more recyclable versions of common everyday throw-away items.

The above trends were quoted from an article, “Trends Transforming the Waste Management Industry in 2021” by Linchpin, October 10, 2021.

I think we can all agree that the Waste Industry is in quite a predicament. On one side we have politicians dictating what has to be done, on another side there are the operators and municipalities that have to affordably and practically find ways to implement those strategies, and finally you have the consumers that must find ways to responsibly dispose of waste. Technologies have been created, markets have been created, and standards have been created to help facilitate the response to the growth in the industry. But is it enough?

Winston Churchill once said, “Those who do not learn from the past are doomed to repeat it”. We are where we are today because of some critical cultural shifts that are part of the story of Waste and Environmental Responsibility.

The Story of our Past

Looking back at the global history of waste management, it’s quite clear much has changed. It’s an ever-changing and ever-growing crucial issue that has been the point of much dialogue around the world. Now more than ever before, our future environment depends on us learning from our past mistakes so as not to inflict even more damage with the waste that is produced.

With the Industrial Revolution and the introduction of synthetic plastic in the early 1900s, our waste management systems began needing more solutions to the growing problems that were being created. We tried switching from horse drawn carriages to motorized waste collection equipment, from inventing dumping levers on garbage trucks, to dumpsters placed in designated public and private areas around every city – but still, it wasn’t enough to keep up with the climbing waste rate.

Fast forward to the 1940s after WWII – disposing of packaging material has increased, the developed world embraces consumerism, and the production of plastic globally rises, leading to more and more individual homes in need of additional waste assistance. Our questions were answered when we were introduced to the first home-used trash bags in the 1960s. Then during the 1970s the electronic waste era begins, but only for us to discover the immense dangers of incorrectly disposing of medical waste a decade later in the 80s.

Though garbage/waste truck technology dramatically changes in the 90s to help the system become more efficient and effective, the developed world continues to struggle with the enormous amount of food and waste being produced, now more than ever. With this staggering rate of waste growth, awareness is created within developing countries of the need to differentiate the types of waste and develop strategies to responsibly deal with each of them. This, in turn, has led to ongoing efforts on behalf of operators to develop creative disposal processes that facilitate the creation of waste streams.

Technology truly moves at the speed of sound. Even for technologists it is difficult to keep up with many of the advancements, let alone average businessmen and women that don’t have the time to invest in keeping up. At Alpine, it is our goal to keep you abreast of technological changes that either directly impact you now or trends you might want to keep an eye on into the near future.

Once such trend that is impacting the Waste industry is the concept of Smart Technology. Many of us are already accustomed to the use of the term “smart” when speaking of our phones (i.e. “smart” phones). If you recall, as mobile computing systems and hardware evolved in the late 1990’s and early 2000’s our Personal Digital Assistants began to be replaced with phones that were much more powerful, had more capacity, and integrated many of the technological pieces to make life easier for users. The smart phone was born! Since that time, the concept of smart technology has been applied to any device that has automation, interaction and control. This can be your refrigerator, car or even your watch!

So, what does that mean for you as a business owner/operator?

More and more cities around the world are seeking to coordinate all their technological pieces into a unified, seamless unit. When this can be done, these “smart cities” can collect data, streamline operations, and provide data that can help them make better decisions for their residents and businesses. This is the wave of the future. With the internet, cloud technology and flexible applications smart cities now have the technological pieces to accomplish this.

You do not have to look internationally to find examples of such integration. The city of San Jose, California currently has over 1 million residents and has at least 5 haulers servicing them. The challenge for the City was to integrate with the various haulers’ technologies so the residents and businesses could have one point of contact to get service and streamline the customer experience. The city developed a 311 service and website that fulfilled that purpose. The haulers that could not integrate with the city 311 service could not provide service to their residents. The open architecture of Alpine’s solutions allowed for this connectivity and is currently integrating with the City of San Jose’s 311 system. Now, the hauler does not have to expend untold resources to respond to hundreds of customers a day about their bulky item pickups or cart deliveries/repairs, the 311 website automates the process.

If you are currently servicing municipalities (or would like to), this is a trend that directly impacts you. If you do not have the technological capabilities to integrate with theses “smart” systems, then you could be in jeopardy of losing the contract to other haulers that possess that capability. The technology you invest in for your operations and trucks is absolutely critical to the future of your business.

As Alpine’s solutions have evolved, we have kept your future needs in mind. The open architecture of Visual RAMS-Pro allows our users to seamlessly connect to applications easily. Currently Alpine is integrating with city billing systems, prospecting tools, online payment systems, scheduling applications, accounting platforms, scale systems and much more. In addition to the integration potential of Alpine, it’s in-cab solution, Visual On-Route, leverages the power of mobile technology and allows our users to capture hundreds of data points from their routes to make intelligent decisions.
